References help Copilot generate answers based on the content you’ve added to your Copilot notebook. If a reference is no longer relevant, you can remove it at any time to keep your notebook focused and up to date.
Note
Copilot Notebooks is available to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat licensed users. Accounts must have a SharePoint or OneDrive license (service plan) to create notebooks. Copilot Notebooks is also available for Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium subscribers. Learn more about Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing and Microsoft 365 Copilot plans.

How to delete a reference from your notebook
Open your notebook in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app or OneNote.

Find the reference you want to remove:
- In the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, in the References section of the Content pane on the right. If the Content pane isn't open, select the pane toggle in the upper-right corner to open it.
- In OneNote, under References in the left pane.
Hover over the reference.
Select the More button
.Select Remove.
Note
Removing a reference doesn’t delete the original file or content. It only removes it from your notebook.
