Applies ToOneNote for Windows 10

Important: OneNote for Windows 10 support will end in  October 2025. To keep up to date with the latest OneNote features, get OneNote from the Microsoft Store or as part of Microsoft 365.

When you first start using OneNote for Windows 10, it opens the default notebook for the account that you've signed in with.

You can begin using this notebook, you can create new notebooks, or you can open additional notebooks from any of your Microsoft accounts (for example, Hotmail, Live.com, or Outlook.com)—or from your work or school accounts.

To open an existing notebook, do the following:

  1. On any page, click the Show Notebook List button Show Notebooks button until you see your list of notebooks.

  2. In the Notebooks list, click or tap the name of any currently open notebook that you want to switch to. If the notebook you want isn't already shown in this list, click or tap More Notebooks.

  3. In the Choose notebooks to open window, do either of the following:

    • To open any additional notebooks from the account you're currently signed in with, select their names in the list, and then click or tap Open.

    • To open a notebook from a different account, click or tap Add Account, sign in with that account when prompted, and then click or tap the name of the notebook you want to open.

Tip: If your list of notebooks is getting cluttered, you can close any notebook when it is no longer needed and reopen it again later. Right-click the name of the notebook, and then click Close This Notebook.

Note: OneNote for Windows 10 only supports cloud-based notebooks. If you prefer to store your notes on your computer's hard drive, you'll need to use OneNote 2016 for Windows. The OneNote for Windows 10 app won't be able to read your disk-based OneNote 2016 notebooks unless you move these notebooks to your free OneDrive account and then open them from that location.
