Use a screen reader to create a new quiz in Microsoft Forms
Applies ToMicrosoft Forms Microsoft Forms Pro

This article is for people who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Windows tools or features and Microsoft 365 products. This article is part of the Accessibility help & learning content set where you can find more accessibility information on our apps. For general help, visit Microsoft Support.

Use Microsoft Forms with your keyboard and a screen reader to create a new quiz. We have tested it with Narrator in Microsoft Edge and JAWS and NVDA in Chrome, but it might work with other screen readers and web browsers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques. You'll learn how to name the quiz, add questions to it, preview it, and share the quiz to get responses. You'll also learn how to add equations to questions.

Create a new quiz

Create a Microsoft Forms quiz, for example, to quickly assess students' progress and give immediate feedback. You can create a quiz with questions that are required to be completed, display question hints, and mark certain answer options as correct.

  1. On the Microsoft Forms main page, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab until you hear "Create a new quiz," and then press Enter. You hear "Loading," and the new quiz opens in a new tab.

  2. To add a title to the quiz, press Shift+Tab until you hear "Form title, untitled quiz," and then press Enter. Type a name for the quiz.

  3. To add a description for the quiz, press the Tab key until you hear "Form description," and then type the quiz description.

  4. To add a question to the quiz, press the Tab key until you hear "Add new question or section," and then press Enter. You hear: "Choice."

  5. To select a question type, do one of the following:

    • To select the Choice question, press Enter.

    • To select the Text, Rating, or Date question, press the Tab key until you hear the type you want, and then press Enter.

    • To access the additional options at the end of the Add new menu, press the Tab key until you hear "More question types," and then press Enter. To browse the options, use the Down and Up arrow keys, and then press Enter to select an option.

  6. You hear: "Question title." Type the question.

  7. If you selected the Choice question, add the first two options to the question. To do this, press the Tab key until you hear "Choice option text," and then type the option text. Repeat for the second option. To add additional options, press the Tab key until you hear "Add option," press Enter, and then type the option text.

  8. To customize the questions, you can do one or more of the following:

    • To mark certain answers as correct or add a correct answer, do one of the following:

      • If you selected the Choice question, press Shift+Tab or the Tab key until you hear the option text you want to mark as the correct answer. Then press Shift+Tab once. You hear: "Correct answer." Press Spacebar. To mark several answers as correct, press the Tab key until you hear "Multiple answers," and then press Spacebar. Then mark all the questions you want as instructed above.

      • For the Text question, you can add one or more correct answers. Press the Tab key until you hear "Add answer," press Enter, and then type an answer. To add additional correct answers, press the Tab key once. You hear: "Add, button." Press Enter, and then type the answer.

    • For the Choice question, you can also add a message for respondents who choose a certain option as a question hint. Press Shift+Tab or the Tab key to navigate to the option text, press the Tab key until you hear "Message for those who choose this," and then press Enter. Press the Tab key until you hear "Message for those who choose this, edit," and then type your message.

    • For the Text question, to allow respondents to enter multiple lines of text, press the Tab key until you hear "Long answer," and then press Spacebar.

    • By default, the Rating question uses a five-star rating. To change how many stars are used, or to use another symbol, for example, a smiley face, press the Tab key until you hear "Five, button," or "Star, button," and then press Enter. You hear "Levels" or "Symbol." With Narrator, turn off the scan mode. Then use the Up and Down arrow keys to select the option you want. Press Enter to select.

    • To define how many points a question is worth, press the Tab key until you hear "Points," and then type the number you want.

    • To make answering a question mandatory, press the Tab key until you hear "Required," and then press Spacebar.

  9. To finish editing a question, press Esc.

  10. To add additional questions, press the Tab key until you hear "Add new question or section," and then press Enter. Then repeat the steps from step 5 onward as needed.

Use the arrow keys to navigate the math keyboard. To select and enter a number, operator, or key, press Spacebar. When the equation is ready, press Esc to close the keyboard.

  6. To add the answer options for the equation in a Choice question, use the option texts that Microsoft Forms creates automatically. Press the Tab key until you hear "Add all," and then press Enter. The correct answer is marked automatically, too. Alternatively, you can type the options texts as instructed in Create a new quiz, step 7.

  7. To add the correct answer for the Text question, press the Tab key until you hear "Add answer," and then press Spacebar. Press Enter to open the math keyboard, enter the correct answer, and then press Esc to close the math keyboard.

Press Spacebar to select the response option.
