Use a screen reader to explore and navigate Microsoft Forms
Applies ToMicrosoft Forms Microsoft Forms Pro

This article is for people who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Windows tools or features and Microsoft 365 products. This article is part of the Accessibility help & learning content set where you can find more accessibility information on our apps. For general help, visit Microsoft Support.

Use your screen reader to navigate around and between the main views in Microsoft Forms. We have tested it with Narrator and JAWS in Microsoft Edge, but it might work with other screen readers and browsers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.

Learn the layout of the Microsoft Forms main page

When you open Microsoft Forms, you land on the main page. At the top of the screen, you can find the Microsoft Forms header row common for all views. It contains buttons for the Microsoft 365 app launcher, Microsoft Forms help, and your Microsoft account and settings. You can also find the Search text field to start a search for all your files across the Microsoft 365 apps.

Below the header row, the main page contains the New form button.

Below the button, you can find the following tabs:

  • The My forms tab where you can find the forms and quizzes you've created, and the buttons for creating new forms and quizzes.

  • The Pinned tab which contains forms you want to highlight.

  • The Shared with me tab which contains forms that someone else has created and shared with you.

To the right of the tabs, you'll find the Type to filter list text field to search for or filter forms from each tab.

Below the tabs row is the All My Forms link that takes you to the My forms page listing all your active and deleted forms on separate tabs.

Below the link, the main page shows My groups, listing your Microsoft 365 groups.

Navigate forms and quizzes

You work with forms and quizzes when you create or edit them, or when you respond to the questions in a form or take a quiz.

When you're creating or editing a form or quiz, the form and quiz pages contain the common header row at the top of the screen showing the name of the current quiz or form and the Back button to return to the main page. Below the header row, there's a toolbar that includes buttons for previewing the quiz, adding themes, sharing, and accessing more options.

The content area below the toolbar on both pages is divided into two tabs:

  • The Questions tab contains the form or quiz title and questions boxes, and the Add question button.

  • On the Responses tab you can find the replies to the form or quiz, and additional options for reviewing them.

When you're responding to form or quiz questions, only the questions form is shown as a web page in your browser.

To cycle through the elements in the form or quiz, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab.

To learn how to navigate to and change the form or quiz settings, refer to Adjust the form or quiz settings.

Navigate submitted responses

  • To navigate to the responses, open the form or quiz whose responses you want to check. In the form or quiz, press Shift+Tab until you hear "Question tab item," and press the Right arrow key once. You hear: "Responses tab item." Press Enter to select.

  • To cycle through the main elements on the Responses tab, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab.

  • To cycle through all elements on the Responses tab in detail with Narrator, switch off scan mode, and then use the SR key+Right and Left arrow keys. With JAWS, use the virtual navigation and the Down and Up arrow keys.
