How to get updates

Surface updates are released in stages—not every Surface will receive updates at the same time, but they'll be delivered to all devices. If you haven’t previously received updates, you can manually update by following the steps at Download drivers and firmware for Surface. 

You can quickly check the health of your Surface drivers and firmware using the Surface app.

1. In the Surface app, expand Help & support to check the update status.
2. If there are updates available, select the Check for updates button to open Windows Update and install the available updates. 

If you don't have the Surface app installed, you can download the Surface app from the Microsoft Store. After the download is complete, select Start and enter Surface in Search. Then, select the   app from the list of results

July 30 release

The following update is available for Surface Laptop 8th Edition with Snapdragon running Windows 11, Version 26H1.

Improvements and fixes:

• Reliability:

  • Customize your keyboard settings as expected. We’ve fixed an issue where the key for the integrated privacy screen isn’t mapping correctly when you customize the top-row keys. 
  • Prevent your device from overheating. We’ve resolved an issue with temperature tracking and device protection.
  • Avoid disruptions when signing in to your device. We’ve resolved an issue that causes Windows Hello facial recognition failures in uneven lighting conditions.
  • Get accurate battery charging information. We’ve fixed an issue where the battery charging icon incorrectly shows that the device is charging after you disconnect a USB-C charger.
  • Make sure your battery charges to your desired level. We’ve resolved an issue where the battery stops charging when the device is asleep.
  • Expand your capabilities with monitors, docks, and other USB-C devices. We’ve resolved an issue where USB-C data, display, or charging devices aren’t recognized after initial startup.
  • Maintain your productivity. We’ve fixed an issue where external monitors don’t restore functionality after the device wakes from sleep.

  • Maximize your battery life. We’ve resolved an issue where increased power consumption shortens the battery life.

The following update is available for Surface Laptop 8th Edition with Snapdragon running Windows 11, Version 26H1.

Improvements and fixes:

• Reliability:

  • Enjoy smooth video playback. We’ve resolved issues where the screen shows a green bar or becomes black when you try to play video.
  • Complete your tasks without delays. We’ve fixed an issue where the screen stops responding for one to five seconds before recovering.
  • Maintain display quality after your device wakes from sleep. We’ve resolved an issue where the internal display shows a distorted image after you remove a dock connected to an external monitor and the device wakes from sleep.
  • Gain improved external monitor detection and connectivity. We’ve addressed an issue where the device doesn’t detect one of the monitors in a dual display without the need to manually switch display modes.
  • Get better audio recovery after your device comes out of hibernation. We’ve reduced the chance of internal speakers losing audio after device hibernation.
  • Share audio over Bluetooth LE Audio seamlessly. We’ve fixed an issue where Microsoft Teams audio isn’t heard when you use the shared audio (preview) feature.
  • Install updates without disruptions. We’ve resolved an issue where the device shuts down and fails to restart while a firmware update is in progress.

  • Get optimal performance when using the battery. We’ve addressed an issue where the device is slow to respond when it runs on the battery.

  • Maximize your efficiency with reliable keyboard functionality. We’ve fixed issues with missed, delayed, or repeated keystrokes.

  • Lead meetings without interruptions. We’ve addressed an issue with unexpected shutdowns that occur after you turn on the microphone during Microsoft Teams calls.

  • Use your headset seamlessly when switching between tasks. We’ve resolved an issue where audio is lost when you join a Microsoft Teams meeting while using a Bluetooth LE headset.

  • Enjoy your music and other audio without disruptions. We’ve fixed a noise issue that occurs when you unplug a charger while playing audio through the built-in speakers.

  • Complete your tasks without delays. We’ve addressed an issue where devices connected to an external monitor get stuck on a logo screen when restarting or coming out of hibernation.

  • Avoid interruptions when your device wakes from sleep. We’ve fixed an issue where external monitors connected via Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock or Surface USB4 Dock show no display after the device resumes from the screen turning off or sleep.

  • Get full touchpad functionality. We’ve addressed an issue where the device may not receive the latest touchpad updates.

  • Take advantage of connected hubs, docks, displays, and storage. We’ve resolved an issue where a USB hub isn’t detected after updates are installed.
  • Enjoy seamless touchscreen functionality. We’ve fixed an issue where screen touches may be inaccurate or undetected.
  • Get a smooth touchpad experience. We’ve fixed issues with tactile signals for touchpad actions to improve consistency and accuracy.
