Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates until the date listed in the Surface devices driver and firmware lifecycle for Windows-based devices.

To keep your Surface Laptop performing its best, make sure that you have the latest Surface updates. 

How to get updates

Surface updates are released in stages—not every Surface will receive updates at the same time, but they'll be delivered to all devices. If you haven’t previously received updates, you can manually update by following the steps at Download drivers and firmware for Surface. 

You can quickly check the health of your Surface drivers and firmware using the Surface app.

Open the Surface app

  1. In the Surface app, expand Help & support to check the update status.

  2. If there are updates available, select the Check for updates button to open Windows Update and install the available updates. 

If you don't have the Surface app installed, you can download the Surface app from the Microsoft Store. After the download is complete, select Start and enter Surface in Search. Then, select the   app from the list of results

Notes: 

  • Firmware updates can’t be uninstalled or reverted to an earlier version.

  • When you install the latest update, you'll also get all the previous updates if your Surface doesn't have them already. Only updates that apply to Surface will be downloaded and installed.

  • After the updates are installed, restart your device to complete the installation process. To restart your device, select Start , and then select Power > Restart.

June 25 release

The following update is available for Surface Laptop 13-inch 1st Edition devices running Windows 11, Version 24H2 or greater.

Improvements and fixes:​​​​​​​

  • Security:

    • Addresses a security vulnerability due to weak authentication that may allow an unauthorized user to elevate privileges over a network. 

    • Addresses a security vulnerability due to improper access control in Windows Cross Device Service allowing an attacker to elevate privileges locally. 

    • Addresses a security vulnerability related to Qualcomm advisory CVE-2025-21480 that may cause memory corruption due to unauthorized command execution in GPU micronode while executing specific sequence of commands.  

  • Reliability:

    • Fixes the issue that may cause the device to get stuck on the ‘Just a moment…’ page during the device setup process. 

    • Fixes the issue that resulted in the device to get stuck on the Windows Logo after waking up from hibernation.

  • Performance and useability:

    • Improves touch functionality by fixing the issue where touch could be lost after disconnecting from an external monitor.

    • Addresses the issue where Camera LED light may remain on while the device is in Sleep mode.

    • Mitigates the issue where the front-facing camera does not function when VHDR is on as default. - Fixes the screen flickering issue during playing Minecraft game, applying Pen and Touch, or using an NFC device with full screen on.

    • Resolves an issue because of which the Wake On LAN (WOL) feature does not function correctly when using Surface Dock 3.

    • Improves system stability and reduces the frequency of unexpected shutdown or occurrence of black screen while watching Netflix.

    • Mitigates the issue that could cause screen flashing or a blank display during power state transitions.

    • Improves the touch experience by resolving an issue where touch functionality could be lost after the device remained in Sleep mode for an extended period.

    • Resolved an issue where the battery icon incorrectly displayed the device as plugged in after waking from Sleep mode, even when it was not connected to a power source.

  • Interoperability:

    • Resolves connectivity issues that caused the device to lose wired network access or fail to detect external monitors when connected via USB-C.

  • Performance and usability:

    • Improves camera stability by reducing unexpected crashes and addressing issues including freezing in video calls when HDR is enabled, errors when launching the Camera app or taking photos, and problems switching between front and rear cameras in some apps.

    • Mitigates an issue where the Settings app could crash when setting up Fingerprint recognition.
