Educators can add Study and Learn to a regular assignment in Microsoft Teams for Education. When a student opens Study and Learn from the assignment, it starts a learning conversation grounded in the assignment title, instructions, and supported resources. Study and Learn helps the student understand the task, plan their work, practice relevant skills, and improve their own work without completing the assignment for them.
Before you begin
- You must create a Teams assignment from Microsoft Teams or an LMS that supports Teams assignments.
- The assignment must be a regular assignment. Quiz assignments and Learning Accelerator assignments aren't supported.
- Students must have Copilot Chat enabled to use Study and Learn. Study and Learn is available to Education users ages 13 and older with a Microsoft 365 Education A1, A3, or A5 license with Copilot Chat enabled for 13-17 year-olds.
- Study and Learn must be available to students in your organization's Microsoft 365 Copilot experience.
- Add clear assignment instructions and at least one supported resource when you want the conversation grounded in course materials.
Add Study and Learn to an assignment
- In Microsoft Teams for Education, go to the class where you want to create the assignment.
- Select Assignments, and then create a new assignment.
- Add the assignment title, instructions, due date, points, and other assignment details.
- Set Student AI guidelines.
- Choose to add AI assistance, and pick Study and Learn.
- Add any resources that students should use. Review Supported assignments and resources before attaching content.
- Review the assignment and publish it to your students.
The assignment title, instructions, and supported resources are provided to Study and Learn when a student launches the assigned experience. Use the assignment instructions to state the learning goal, the work students should complete, and any expectations for using AI.
Note
AI guidelines shown on an assignment communicate your expectations to students. They don't change Study and Learn into an answer-generating tool or override its learning-focused behavior.
What students experience
When a student opens the assignment, they can start the assigned Study and Learn experience from the assignment page. Study and Learn:
- Identifies the assignment the student is working on.
- Uses the assignment title, instructions, and supported resources as context.
- Recommends a useful starting point based on the assignment.
- Guides the student with explanations, questions, hints, practice, and feedback.
- Helps the student improve their work while leaving the assignment deliverable for the student to complete.
- Includes citations when it uses information from supported assignment resources.
Students can ask to focus on another part of the assignment or request a different kind of help. If Study and Learn can't access part of the assignment context, it explains what is missing and might ask the student for the minimum information needed to continue.

- Provide a supported text or document alternative for video, Whiteboard, MakeCode, notebook, or Learning Activities content that students need during the conversation.
Troubleshooting
The Study and Learn option doesn't appear
Confirm that you're creating a regular assignment. The option isn't available for quiz assignments or Learning Accelerator assignments. If you're creating a regular assignment, ask your IT administrator to confirm that Study and Learn is available to the assigned students.
A student can't open Study and Learn
Confirm that the student is signed in with the account that received the assignment and is eligible to use Study and Learn. If the problem continues, ask your IT administrator to review the student's Microsoft 365 Education license and Copilot access.
Study and Learn can't use an attached resource
Check whether the resource type is supported and whether the student has permission to open it. Replace unsupported resources with a supported file, OneNote page, or web URL. For protected or restricted files, follow your organization's information-protection policies and provide an accessible alternative when appropriate.
The conversation doesn't reflect the assignment
Review the assignment title and instructions, confirm that required files and links are available to students, and verify that essential content is in a supported format. The student can also tell Study and Learn which part of the assignment they're working on.
Privacy and responsible use
Study and Learn uses the assignment context to support the assigned learning task. Educators and students should follow their organization's policies for sharing personal, confidential, or sensitive information with Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Study and Learn can make mistakes. Students should review citations, verify important information against course materials, and follow the educator's academic integrity and AI-use expectations. Educators shouldn't treat use of Study and Learn by itself as proof of mastery, authorship, effort, or misconduct.
