To help keep your Microsoft account safe, make it easier to recover if it's compromised, and strengthen it against attacks, we recommend you download and install Microsoft authenticator to your mobile device.

Download

Not only does the app add another layer of security to your Microsoft account, but it also lets you sign in to your account from your phone without needing a password. This prevents issues like forgetting your password or falling victim to phishing attacks. Learn more.

If you can't use Authenticator on your mobile, you should:

  1. Enable two-step verification to get a security code to your email or phone every time you sign in.

  2. Add additional security information to your account to make it easier to recover your account if you forget your password or your account is hacked.

Other tips for keeping your account secure

Microsoft will never ask for your password in email, so never reply to any email asking for any personal information, even if it claims to be from Outlook.com or Microsoft.

Read about texts or emails from Microsoft, and Outlook security for more information on email safety.

Most operating systems have free software updates to enhance security and performance. Because updates help keep your mobile and computer safer, we strongly recommend that you set up your device to get these updates automatically. You can set up your PC to get the latest updates automatically for Windows.
