Microsoft Copilot Privacy Controls
Note: This article refers to privacy and safety topics related to Microsoft Copilot. It does not apply to the use of Microsoft 365 Copilot when signed in with Entra ID. For more information on this read about Enterprise Data Protection.
In Microsoft Copilot, you have control if Microsoft can:
-
Personalize your experience with Copilot and provide you with a more tailored experience that meets your needs. You can disable personalization at any time. You can also control what Copilot remembers about you.
-
Train our generative AI models to make Copilot a better experience for you and others. You can opt out of using your conversations for model training at any time.
-
Show you personalized ads in Copilot and other Microsoft services. You can opt out of seeing personalized ads at any time.
-
Retain your conversation history for 18 months. You can delete individual items from your conversation history or delete your entire conversation history in Copilot at any time.

Control personalization in Copilot
Learn more about personalization in Copilot.
If you are signed in to Copilot, you can change your personalization settings in the Copilot app at any time in the following ways:
-
On copilot.com: Select your profile icon, select your profile name, then select Privacy > Personalization.
-
In Copilot for Windows and macOS: Select your profile icon, then select Settings > Privacy > Personalization.
-
In the Copilot mobile app: Open the menu, select your profile icon, then select Account > Privacy > Personalization.
If you turn off personalization, Copilot will forget its memories of your conversations. You can still view your past conversations; however, your future Copilot experience will no longer be personalized. If you later turn personalization on again, Copilot will begin remembering details that you’ve shared with it, and it will begin personalizing your experience again.
If you do not want Copilot to use specific conversations for personalization, you can delete them from your conversation history.
Note: The personalization setting in Copilot does not control whether you receive personalized ads.
Control what Copilot remembers about you
You can view, edit, and delete specific things Copilot remembers about you at any time:
-
To see what Copilot remembers, simply ask Copilot, “What do you know about me?” Copilot will then summarize its memory of you.
-
To delete specific items from memory, ask Copilot to forget about that information (for example, “Forget that I like science fiction movies”). Copilot will remove that item from its memory.
-
To add specific items from memory, ask Copilot to remember that information (for example, enter the prompt “Remember that I like gardening”). Copilot will add that item to its memory.
-
You can validate any changes to memory by asking Copilot again, “What do you know about me?”
If you want Copilot to forget all details it remembers about you, you can turn off personalization.
Control whether your conversations are used for model training

If you are signed in to Copilot, you can control whether your conversations are used for model training at any time in the following ways:
-
On copilot.com: Select your profile icon, select your profile name, then select Privacy > Model training on text and Model training on voice.
-
In Copilot for Windows or macOS: Select your profile icon, then select Settings > Privacy > Model training on text and Model training on voice.

In the Copilot mobile app: Open the menu, select your profile icon, then select Account > Privacy > Model training on text and Model training on voice.
Opting out will exclude your past, present, and future conversations from being used for training these AI models. Once you opt out, that change will be reflected throughout our systems within 30 days.
This setting will not exclude your conversations from being used for other general product or system improvements nor from use for advertising, digital safety, security, and compliance purposes as outlined in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Note: You can opt-out of AI training and still have personalization turned on. In this case, Copilot will remember recent conversations to give you a more personalized response, but Microsoft will not use your conversations and other Microsoft activities for training Copilot’s AI models.
Control whether you see personalized ads in Copilot
If you are signed in to Copilot, you can control whether you see personalized ads in Copilot and other Microsoft services. This can be disabled by going to your personalized ad settings and then switching the toggle off under See ads that interest you.
If you choose to continue seeing personalized ads in Copilot, you can separately control whether your Copilot conversation history is used to further personalize the ads you already receive. If you do not want your personalized ads to be based on your Copilot conversation history, you can turn off personalization.
Note: Regardless of your settings, Copilot does not serve personalized advertising to authenticated users under the age of 18.
