Family Safety data collection and privacy options
Personal and diagnostic data collection
The Microsoft Family Safety app is designed to help develop healthy habits, explore safely online, and to stay connected to your loved ones. As part of this, Microsoft collects both personal data (name, email address, birth date, etc) and diagnostic data.
Diagnostic data has two categories: required and optional. If you use the Family Safety app, the app will send required data to Microsoft. Optional data is additional data that you choose to share with Microsoft.
-
Required. The minimum data necessary to help keep the Family Safety app safe, secure, up to date, and performing as expected.
-
Optional. Optional data includes additional details about your app usage. This includes things like how you use the app by the buttons and screens you click on. We use this data to make the product better. Optional data collection captures data from the Family Safety app only and none of it includes any personal information.
Note: Depending on the country you live in, Microsoft will not offer the ability for children to opt-in to optional data collection. This setting will be off by default and only when that child reaches the appropriate age will they have the option of opting in.
Biometrics and pin use in Family Safety
Microsoft Family Safety also offers options to protect access to the Family Safety app by allowing parents to create a password using their fingerprint or face ID.
Data collection and use of information:
Mobile OS (Android or iOS) biometric data (fingerprint or face) is used, with your permission, only for safeguarding access to the Family Safety app.
This data is not stored nor shared for any other purposes. Microsoft is not storing any copy of biometrics inside or outside of your device, we access the stored biometrics through the operating system for verification alone.
An in-app PIN can be created and stored using the OS' Keystore or keychain on your device. This data is not stored with Microsoft.
Handling and destroying of data:
The biometric access permission and PIN data configured through the set-up process can be destroyed by logging out of your Microsoft account (MSA), or deletion of the app.
