Bluetooth Low Energy Audio (LE Audio) is a modern Bluetooth audio technology that streams sound over Bluetooth Low Energy instead of Classic Bluetooth. Unlike Classic Audio, which relies on profiles such as A2DP and HFP, LE Audio uses newer profiles like the Telephony and Media Audio Profile (TMAP) to deliver audio more efficiently.

LE Audio improves battery life, voice call quality, and device flexibility, while enabling new capabilities not supported by Classic Bluetooth Audio. These include support for LE Audio hearing aids, multi‑device audio sharing, and more efficient wireless audio experiences.

Bluetooth LE Audio support requirements

To use LE Audio, it needs to be supported on both the Windows device and the headset or earbuds.

To determine if a headset or earbuds support LE Audio, review the manufacturer's specifications to look for Bluetooth LE Audio and/or declared support of the TMAP profile. For additional information, contact the device's manufacturer.

Not all Windows 11 devices support LE Audio, even if the Windows device is marketed as supporting Bluetooth LE. To use LE Audio, the Windows device must:

  • Be running Windows 11, version 22H2 or newer.

  • Have compatible Bluetooth LE support and a compatible audio codec.

  • Have LE Audio capable drivers from the manufacturer for both the Bluetooth LE radio and the audio codec.

Checking if the Windows 11 device supports LE Audio

To determine if the Windows 11 device supports LE Audio, follow these steps:

  1. Select Start and then select Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices . Or Select the following Bluetooth & devices > Devices shortcut:Open Bluetooth & devices > Devices

  2. In the Bluetooth & devices > Devices window, under the Device settings section, ensure the setting Use LE Audio when available is switched On. If this setting isn’t available, the Windows device doesn’t currently support LE Audio, which can be due to hardware limitations or missing or incompatible drivers.

Note: Bluetooth LE Audio isn't supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 21H2.

Some Windows 11 devices that currently don't support LE Audio might gain support for it in the future through driver updates from the manufacturer. For additional compatibility questions about Bluetooth LE Audio, consult with the manufacturer of the Windows device and the headset or earbuds.
