User Guide This article is part of the Microsoft Dragon Copilot user guide.

Note: The availability of the features described in this document depends on your license and the configuration of your system. For more information, contact your administrator.

Note: If you're working with Dragon Copilot desktop, we recommend using Dragon Copilot in compact view for this workflow. For more information, see: Switch between views.

To dictate in an editable field in your EHR or any other app, do the following:

  1. Place the cursor in the field and select the dictation icon  Microphone-24 at the bottom. Alternatively, press the record button on your microphone or use the configured keyboard shortcut.

  2. Start dictating; Dragon Copilot listens to you speaking and transforms your words into written text.

  3. When you're finished, select the dictation icon Microphone-active-24, press the record button on your microphone or use the configured keyboard shortcut.

Note: If you're working with Dragon Copilot web or embedded, the keyboard shortcut to start/stop dictation only works if Dragon Copilot has the window focus. If you're working with the desktop app, the keyboard shortcut works regardless of where the window focus is.

If the field you've placed the cursor in is supported by Dragon Copilot, the text is written directly in it.

If your cursor wasn't placed in an editable field or if the field it was placed in isn't fully supported, Dragon Copilot writes the text in the dictation clipboard as a new memo. The Dictation clipboard session is a special type of session that captures text dictated in an unsupported environment. From there, you can copy and transfer the text to your EHR. If Dragon Copilot is in compact view (desktop only), it automatically switches to narrow view, with the Dictation clipboard open.

Dragon Copilot desktop only: You can also configure Dragon Copilot to write the text in the unsupported environment instead; in this case, only basic dictation functionality is available. When the cursor focus is in a field that only supports basic dictation, the microphone icon changes:  MicUnsupportedEnvironment
